GOKCEADA - CANAKKALE TURKEY
Gokceada is the biggest island of Canakkale as well as Turkey. The island is about 289,5 km square . Gokceada is located 33 miles away from Canakkale and 14 miles from Gabatepe sea port of the gallipoli peninsula. Gokceada is also 16 miles away from the Greek island Limni and 14 miles away from the island Samothrace. Gokceada island has 9 villages and the town centre. The name of the villages can be stated as Kalekoy, Eski Bademli, Yeni Bademli, Zeytinlikoy, Tepekoy, Derekoy, Ugurlu, Eselek, and Sirinkoy.
Gokceada has also rich water resources and ranked 4th island of the world from the point of plenty of fresh water sources in the world. With its impressive beaches and nature covered with pine and olive trees with different tones, Gokceada attracts thousands of tourists each year.
According to Grek mythology, the palace of Thetis, mother of Akhilleos was situated between Imroz and Samothrace. The ancient history of the Gokceada island begins with the archaic period. According to the famous historian ‘Homer’, the Imrozians took the side of the Trojans in the Trojan war. In Iliad of Homer, son of the Trojan King Priamos was enslaved by Achilles and put up for sale. Then, Jetion, the King of Imroz, bought him and secretly sent him to Troy. This shows that the Imrozians were totally against the Greek forces. It is told that at the end of Trojan war, the administrators of Athens expelled the prehellenites and sent them to Gokceada and Limni
Transportation to the Gokceada Island is sustained by ferries both from Canakkale sea port and Gabatepe sea port of gallipoli peninsula.
Ferries from Canakkale depart at 16.00 pm to Gokceada and ferries to Canakkale from Gokceada depart at 12:45 pm. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes journey from Canakkale to Gokceada. On the other hand there are more frequent ferries from Gabatepe sea port of Gallipoli Peninsula which mainly run in summer period.
Gokceada has also an 1200 meter lenght airport which is mainy used by private planes at the moment.
