Anzac Day
The name ANZAC is formed with the first letters of the words 'Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.' Those are the brave soldiers who took part in the landing operation on the morning of April 25, 1915 to the the district, the so called Anzac Cove in the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Gallipoli Campaign lasted about 8 months. The results of the the Gallipoli campaign was appalling. 26,111 Australian casualties of whom 8,141 were killed. In addition, New Zealand suffered 7,571 casualties of whom 2,431 were killed. Britain endured 21,255 dead over 120,000 casualties, while French troops lost about 10,000 over 27,000 casualties. India and Newfoundland lost 1350 and 49 soldiers respectively. The Turkish lost about 80.000 soldiers over 220,000 casualties
Starting from the year 1916, every year ceremonies of remembrance are performed not only in the Gallipoli Peninsula but also all over the Australia and New Zealand. The father of the word 'Anzac Day' can be considered George Pearce.
Each year thousands of Australian and New Zealander from all over the world come to Canakkale Gallipoli in order to take part in the unfogettable experience of the Anzac Day Dawn Service. Attending to the Dawn Service in the Holly Lands of the Gallipoli Peninsula is considered as a type of Pilgrimage.
One should know that the sprit of ANZAC can not be confined to the battlefields of the Gallipoli, in fact it lives all over these great countries of Australia and New Zealand
